The recent successes of both Lewis Hamilton and Senator Barack Obama are both celebrated here in the Lower School Library. See how much you know by taking the Black History Month Quiz.

You may have noticed that books on the display racks have now got very bright yellow letter stickers on their spines.
The fiction and non-fiction ones have been divided into their different series, so for example you can find all the 'Horrible Histories's books together or the 'Star Wars' books together on the shelf. The Short stories also have these stickers so that they get shelved back on the rack and not in the main fiction sequence. Graphic novels live on the rack on the wall. If you want to find out more, there is a chart explaining all the locations on the side of the shelving trolley.

The lower School Library celebrated World Book Day with its annual 'Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?' competition. There was lots of lively debate amongst boys, as to who the mystery dinner guests were. Congratulations to Nalin Patel, 8C who won the chocolatey prize!

See if you can guess who the dinner guests are...
There are five men and one woman. All are well-known literary characters from novels.

We were lucky enough to be able to welcome author Marcus Sedgwick to Dulwich College on World Book Day. Marcus has written a number of very successful novels: Floodland (2002) which won the Branford-Boase award for 'Best Children's Debut Novel'; Witch Hill (2001) which was nominated for an 'Edgar Allen Poe Award', the 'Independent Reading Association Award' and the 'Portsmouth Book Award'; The Dark Horse (2002) which was shortlisted for the 'Guardian Children's Fiction Prize', the 'Carnegie Medal' and the 'Blue Peter Book Award'; The book of Dead Days (2003); The Dark Flight Down (2004) and The Foreshadowing (2005).
Marcus gave Year 6, 7 & 8 boys a talk in the Old Library during lunchtime where he demonstrated how much time and effort was involved in publishing a book, especially before a word of the manuscript is even written.
He engaged the audience by showing copies of his original plans and manuscripts. He answered questions and signed copies of his books.
Later that afternoon Marcus hosted an English lesson with 7R in the Lower School Library. 7R were involved in developing characters, locations and themes with Marcus. They then had to spend ten minutes writing a story.
Some of these were read aloud to the class and were met with applause. Marcus also introduced 7R to his next book entitled My Swordhand is Singing (2007) which takes inspiration from 17th century vampire legends. The class was also informed that Marcus drew his own illustrations for his novels. They discovered that his original pencil drawings were scanned and then had digital effects applied to them to give them their unique style.
Many thanks to Marcus Sedgwick for giving us really interesting and entertaining talks on World Book Day.

Popular Horror writer, Darren Shan, visited Dulwich College on Thursday 26 January. Although the session in the Edward Alleyn Theatre clashed with Lower School House Music, the crowd of thirty to forty, very enthusiastic, fans had a chance to ask numerous questions about the 'Saga of Darren Shan' and 'Demonata' series. Darren Shan read extracts from forthcoming novels in the series to whet the boys' appetites. Darren Shan signed copies of his books before his talk.

This week is National Children's Book Week. On Wenesday Dulwich College welcomed new author Robert Muchamore to sign books and speak to the boys in the Edward Alleyn Theatre during lunch-break. 8C and 8E were lucky enough to have their own private session in the Lower School Library with Robert Muchamore and many great questions were asked. Robert told us all about how he was demotivated to write when he was younger and put it the idea of being an author on the back burner. It wasn't until his holiday in Australia, and a particularly unyielding trip to his nephew's local bookstore, that he was encouraged to start writing again.

For more details about his books and information about the CHERUB campus please visit:
Today The Lower School and Junior School Libraries held a raffle for three grey CHERUB T-shirts.
The winners were:
Freddie Pearce, 7L
Victor Hwang, 8L
Connor McDermott, 5K
Mrs Bottomley will present the T-shirts during Monday assembly.
All proceeds will be donated to the charity of Robert Muchamore's choice.

The library is currently hosting a lesson during the Academic Fun Day. This is when boys from other schools come and spend a day at Dulwich College to see whet we are like! The session in the Library involves a fun 'Reading Game' where the boys decide which books, from a selection, have the 'best cover', the 'best blurb' and the 'best beginning'. Organised into genre (adventure, fantasy, sport, history, horror, sci-fi, crime and comedy) the boys have three minutes to judge the books before the whistle blows and they move on to the next genre.
The invited schools are: Rosemead Preparatory School, Hornsby House School, Virgo Fidelis Preparatory School, St. Christopher's Preparatory School and others.
Over the summer the Lower School Library has had a fixed projector and an interactive whiteboard fitted. This should hopefully improve our 'Information Skills' lessons and any other lessons which are taught in the Library.
